I love that it’s about new beginnings. After a long winter (o.k. – I live in Atlanta but I’m from Miami so ANY winter feels long to me) the flowers start to bloom and everything is green and with it my mood lifts and I put my face towards the sun.
I don’t think it’s an accident that graduations take place at this time of year (and I have no idea of the actual origins of this practice… so let’s just give me some artistic license here, o.k.?). Because as we all know by now from the countless Commencement Exercises we have been to or participated in- the word commencement actually means to begin, not end.
So it’s a beginning. Certainly for our children who are moving on, moving out, moving in to dorms and college life.
But what about for us? For the moms left behind? It doesn’t feel like spring at all, does it?
We aren’t moving to some new place with new exciting people. Nope, we are in the same place, except it feels strange and different.
Quiet and sad…. sort of like winter.
But I am here to remind you that winter isn’t such a bad thing
It’s a time of quiet growth. You can’t see the roots taking hold and the buds about to pop, but that doesn’t mean that under the soil those things aren’t happening.
This is a time of new beginnings for not only your child but for you as well. That doesn’t mean it is without struggle or even the occasional tears… but like winter, those things don’t last.
Let me help you peel off the winter layers and help you find the spring that is ready to bloom….
After all, commencement is only the beginning.
